Manhunt Underway for Dangerous Assault Suspect
Authorities in Southern Pines, NC, are actively searching for 23-year-old Matthew Clarke Hoover, who is wanted for assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop on April 27. The incident unfolded shortly after 10:30 p.m. when officers pulled over a red Dodge pickup truck driven by Hoover.
Incident Details and Officer's Injury
According to the Southern Pines Police Department, during the roadside investigation, police discovered narcotics and paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Hoover initially refused to comply with officers' commands, leading to an altercation wherein he assaulted one of the officers, resulting in serious injuries that required sutures. Fortunately, while a handgun was observed within the truck, it was not discharged during the incident.
Police Response and Immediate Actions
After Hoover fled the scene, police later found the abandoned pickup truck. Inside, they uncovered additional evidence, including handgun ammunition, narcotics, and materials associated with drug use. The injured officer has since been treated and released from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Multiple Felony Warrants Issued
Hoover is currently wanted on multiple felony charges, including assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of cocaine, and carrying a concealed weapon. Police have advised the public that he should be considered dangerous and armed.
