Local Pickleball Star Shines in New League
In an inspiring tale for aspiring athletes everywhere, Moore County's own Katie Carpenter has recently been propelled into the spotlight of the competitive pickleball scene. Co-owner of The Racquet Club of Seven Lakes and a dedicated community advocate for the sport, Carpenter was chosen as the first draft pick by the Florida Royals in the newly established United States Legends Pickleball League (USLPL), a professional league geared towards players 50 and older.
A League of Their Own
What sets the USLPL apart is its focus on showcasing elite players who have transitioned from other sports. Co-founded by seasoned athletes Ron Cortese and Mike Cao, both of whom possess a rich legacy in competitive sports, the league is home to 12 diverse teams each composed of talented male and female players. During the combine held in August in Richmond, Virginia, Carpenter shined brightly among stiff competition, finishing second overall among the participating women.
Building Community Through Competition
As Carpenter reflects on her journey, she highlights the importance of camaraderie that pickleball fosters. "The friendships that emerge here are crucial," she notes, referring to her recently opened facility, The Pickle Place, which has become a hub for local players. This unique indoor venue has ushered in a wave of enthusiasm for pickleball in Moore County, further inspiring individuals to pick up paddles regardless of age or skill level.
Opportunities Await
Joining the USLPL is not only a personal achievement for Carpenter; it is also a significant opportunity to develop her skills and expand her network. She looks forward to the challenges presented by former athletes turned pickleball enthusiasts, expressing enthusiasm for the league's focus on high-caliber play.
Positive Vibes and High Hopes
With the inaugural season already underway, Carpenter’s journey exemplifies the spirit of sport—that any age can be a chance for new beginnings. Her story showcases how perseverance, passion, and community can lead to amazing opportunities. As she prepares for her first match with the Florida Royals, Carpenter embodies the message that it's never too late to pursue one's passion and make meaningful connections along the way.
